GIA Movie Script Book
Project Description
This project is an expressive type exploration of the script for the movie “Gia”, a 1998 HBO movie starring Angelina Jolie. This type exploration aims to convey the pain and abandonment issues that plagued Gia’s personal life while still alluding to her stunning physical beauty. Gia became a famous supermodel breaking what was the beauty standard of the time with her raw exterior appearance. I wanted to highlight these contrasting elements of her personality and looks and also her tumultuous background subsequently glamorous life, through a mix of typefaces and a limited contrasting color palette. The color palette is very intentional, Most of the book is black and white, because it is high intensity of contrast, as well as an ode to the scenes, mostly photoshoot scenes that are shown in black and white. The addition of red in the color palette is to signify her rich beauty as red is often used as a seductive color, it also a reference to the cause of her death. Gia died due to AIDS which is represented by the color red. I decided to take advantage of the beautiful serif typeface Didot for its beauty, as well as its ties to the fashion industry. To contrast the elegance of Didot I use the sans-serif Freight sans for its legibility in smaller copy.
